What is the difference between Lime paint and Concrete effect paint?

Lime paint and Concrete effect paint share the same base: lime. Both types of paint are ecological and create a beautiful concrete effect. Concrete effect paint is custom-mixed for you in colour. The colour is created using wet pigments, based on a machine-generated recipe. Lime paint, on the other hand, comes with a sachet of dry pigments. This is also based on a recipe, but one made from our own pigment jars.

With Lime paint, you mix the pigments yourself using a small amount of water. For recipes with little pigment, you can follow the ratio of 50 ml of water per 1 litre of paint. Do you have a colour that requires more pigment? Then use a ratio of 100 ml of water per 1 litre of paint. With recipes that contain a lot of pigment, it would otherwise be very difficult to create a smooth pigment mixture. You don’t want pigment clumps in your paint.

In short: both types of paint deliver a stunning finish.

What are the characteristics of the different types of paint?
  • Concrete effect paint and Lime paint are made in different ways, but the end result on your wall is the same. Both create a beautiful concrete effect. The darker the colour, the more contrast you'll see in the pattern. There is one key difference: Concrete effect paint is tinted for you in advance, while Lime paint is tinted by yourself using the included pigment.
  • Loam paint creates a more subtle effect on the wall. It has a powdery texture and gives a calmer appearance compared to Concrete effect paint or Lime paint.
  • Chalk paint has a uniform finish and closely resembles 'regular' wall paint as you may know it. It's perfect for painting furniture, but it also looks great on walls.
  • Exterior paint also has a uniform look. It is naturally waterproof, so there’s no need to apply a coating. This type of paint is especially suitable for wooden surfaces.
  • Metallic paint is a semi-transparent coating (Verf Protect) with metallic pigments. You apply this topcoat over Concrete effect paint to achieve one of our six colours: Royal Gold, Bronze, Antique Silver, Silver Pearl, Solar Gold and Antique Gold. Plenty of options to add some shine to your living space!
Why is lime paint such a good choice?

At betonlook.nl, we’re proud of our lime paint, which is no less than 97% ecological. That’s right, we go green with a colourful twist! Why? Because we believe in sustainability and reducing our ecological footprint. Our lime paint is made from slaked lime and other natural materials, without a trace of synthetic substances. While many other wall paints are filled with artificial additives, we keep it all-natural. Our thickeners are based on cellulose and starch, which means our paint is not only safe for you, but also for the planet. In short, lime paint from betonlook.nl is not just great for your interior, but also for the environment. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love that?

But wait, there’s more! Lime paint has plenty of other benefits that make it an excellent choice. One of our favourite reasons? Our lime paint has an ultra-matte finish. This means that when you apply it to your walls, you’ll get a beautifully matte look that instantly adds warmth and character to the room. And if that wasn’t enough, our lime paint is also breathable. That means it can “breathe” in your space: it absorbs moisture when it’s too humid, and releases it when the air is drier. This helps maintain a healthy and comfortable indoor climate.

And the best part? Our lime paint is incredibly easy to apply. So even if you’re not a professional painter, you can easily create a stunning, eco-friendly finish in your home. So what are you waiting for? Choose lime paint from betonlook.nl and give your interior a natural, stylish upgrade!

Why should you choose our Concrete effect paint?

Concrete effect paint, the affordable alternative to Microcement, offers a similarly stunning effect, without draining your bank account. And the best part? It’s so easy to apply that even the least experienced DIYers can handle it with confidence. As if that wasn’t enough, it’s also completely eco-friendly. At betonlook.nl, we’re committed to keeping our environmental impact as low as possible. Just like our lime paint, our concrete effect paint is made from slaked lime, unlike the usual latex or acrylic that seals off your walls. Concrete effect paint is breathable, allowing your walls to “breathe” freely.

With ingredients like slaked lime, calcium carbonates, less than 3% vinyl resin, and thickeners based on cellulose and starch, we create a product that’s not only beautiful but also kind to the planet.

Just imagine: a Mediterranean feel in your own space, without ever needing to leave home! That’s exactly what concrete effect paint has to offer. Instant holiday vibes in your own house who wouldn’t want that?

Now, let’s talk ease of use. At betonlook.nl, we aim to make the painting process as simple and stress-free as possible for our customers. That’s why our concrete effect paint comes pre-mixed in your chosen colour so you can get started right away, no hassle with mixing. Whether you want to give your hallway an industrial look or transform your toilet into a modern space our concrete effect paint makes it possible, effortlessly!

We know that certain areas of the house take more of a beating, like hallways and toilets. That’s why we offer our Bio paint coating. This special coating is designed to protect your concrete effect finish in places where dirt and wear are common. With the Bio paint coating, you can safely use concrete effect paint in even the most demanding spaces while preserving the durability and beauty of your interior.

That said, we’d like to share a small detail: in some cases, the Bio paint coating may produce a subtle sheen in natural or artificial light. But don’t worry this light gloss actually adds a touch of elegance to your space. It helps enhance the depth and richness of the colours, making your room feel even more lively and dynamic. So while the Bio paint coating gives your concrete effect paint long-lasting protection, it also brings a refined touch to your interior. It’s a small detail to be aware of—one you’ll likely come to appreciate!

What are the pros and cons of the different types of paint?

Concrete effect paint and Lime paint
Concrete effect paint and lime paint are excellent choices for humid areas such as laundry rooms, bathrooms, or well-insulated homes where condensation may occur. These types of paint are vapour-open, allowing your walls to breathe and contribute to a healthy indoor climate. Moreover, they are 97% ecological, which is not only beneficial for the environment in the short term, but also for the future. In fact, they even have air-purifying qualities at first, similar to plants, as they absorb CO²  even if they’re a different colour than your favourite houseplant.

However, it’s important to note that concrete effect paint and lime paint are not suitable for the shower area in bathrooms. Constant exposure to water makes these areas too damp, which can lead to problems with adhesion and durability. For these specific parts of the bathroom, it's wise to consider alternatives, such as our Microcement.

Japandi paint
Japandi paint is a brand-new line at betonlook.nl, founded by Laila Rietbergen from Japandi Interior. She has long been a source of inspiration for many, and is now launching her own line of lime paint with betonlook.nl. Why are her colours specifically made in lime paint? Because lime paint is the unique concept of betonlook.nl. With over a hundred types of pigments at our disposal, we can finely adjust colours with this paint. We aim to make it as easy as possible for our customers in this paint line, since all colours complement each other. Whether you choose from the 60% that can be used throughout your home, or from the 30% that focus more on safety, this Japandi line makes choosing much simpler.

Using loam paint
Loam paint is 100% ecological and made from natural materials like clay powder, water, and our natural pigments. If sustainability is important to you, this is an excellent choice. Like our lime and concrete effect paints, loam paint is vapour-open, supporting a healthy indoor climate. It’s also easy to apply using a block brush  just like our lime and concrete effect paints.

As for downsides, loam paint can be delicate. It may be damaged by excessive water or friction. It doesn't have a scrub class like our Bio wall paint. Applying loam paint can seem more labour-intensive compared to paints that are rolled on and ready to use. In short, our loam paint offers many benefits, but also has some limitations. It’s important to weigh these factors to determine whether loam paint is the right choice for you.

Application of chalk paint
Chalk paint is perfect for painting furniture and even staircases. By applying the Microcement coating on top, the paint is protected from dirt. Although betonlook.nl offers a beautiful selection of chalk paint colours, custom colours can also be created on request. Do note that this paint is not fully waterproof, so it’s best to avoid using it in wet areas like bathrooms.

Exterior paint
Our exterior paint is ideal for fences or outdoor structures. We offer exclusive colours such as traditional black or a stunning terracotta shade. This paint provides a smooth finish not a concrete effect.

Texture paint
Want to create a concrete effect effect outdoors? Then our texture paint is the perfect choice! On smooth surfaces like plastered walls or concrete, this paint creates a stunning concrete effect finish. All you need beforehand is our coarse EcoPrimer to prep the surface properly.

Note: on surfaces like brickwork, the effect will look more like limewash. But on smooth substrates, the concrete look really shines! With our outdoor texture paint, you’ll give your exterior space a tough, long-lasting appearance.

Metallic paint set
Last but not least, our metallic paint set is a unique combination of paint and coating that gives your wall a striking look and is easy to clean. With this variation of paint types, betonlook.nl offers solutions for every taste and use. The metallic paint set is available in six stunning shades, ranging from our bestseller Antique Gold to a beautifully warm bronze tone.

Which types of paint are suitable for outdoor use?

We often get the question which types of paint are suitable for outdoor use. We're happy to tell you more about that. At the moment, we offer two types of paint that are suitable for exterior use: our Exterior paint and our Texture paint. Below, we’ll explain the differences between these two types and the surfaces they’re best suited for.

Exterior paint

Exterior paint is most suitable for wood, such as garden furniture, fences or pergolas. You can apply the Exterior paint directly to the wood. There’s no need for a primer. It’s important to properly prepare the wood before applying the paint. This means the wood must be free from grease, dust and other dirt. Still see remains of old stain or paint? It's best to remove them before applying the Exterior paint. You can do this easily with a paint scraper or sandpaper. Do you have a hole or damage in the wood? Fill it first with wood filler and wait until it has fully cured. Once you have a smooth and clean surface, lightly sand it to ensure proper adhesion of the paint.

Exterior paint is available in more than 10 colours. It is a matte, smooth type of paint. For the best coverage and colour intensity, we recommend applying two coats.

Texture paint

Texture paint is suitable for almost all surfaces, except wood. You can apply it very well over concrete or brick, for example. Always apply our coarse EcoPrimer before using Texture paint. EcoPrimer coarse is suitable for exterior use, has a rougher texture and ensures strong adhesion of the paint. That makes it perfect for more rugged surfaces. Using the EcoPrimer creates solid bonding between the surface and the Texture paint. This automatically increases the durability of the paint because it is less likely to peel. Our Texture paint is available in over 80 colours. It’s a structured paint with a grain. It brings flat surfaces to life. Are you applying it to brick? Keep in mind that the concrete effect effect may be less visible. On a concrete wall, however, the effect will stand out much more clearly. So prepare your surface based on the effect you want to achieve.

Texture paint is mixed with dry pigments. This results in high colour intensity and long-lasting colour quality. Didn’t find your colour, or do you have another question? Feel free to contact our customer service, we usually respond within one working day.

Why can't loam plaster be applied to wood?

Why is it not a good idea to use loam plaster on wood?
That’s an excellent question, and we’re happy to explain. Loam plaster and wood don’t always go well together due to a few specific reasons. First of all, our loam plaster is naturally moist when applied to a surface. If you apply it to a loose wooden panel, the moisture in the plaster can cause the wood to warp. This is similar to what happens when a wooden plank comes into contact with water and starts bending.

Even if you apply our loam plaster to a wooden surface that is firmly attached to the wall, problems can still arise. Loam plaster hardens as it dries. It becomes rigid and inflexible. Wood, on the other hand, is a material that expands and contracts, especially due to changes in temperature and humidity. This creates a conflict between our loam plaster and the moving wood, which can result in cracking or even crumbling of the plaster layer.

In short, loam plaster and wood behave differently when exposed to changes in moisture and temperature. Loam plaster is a hard material that doesn’t flex along with wood’s natural movement. That’s why we recommend applying loam plaster to a stable and solid surface, such as concrete. This way, you ensure your loam plaster stays beautiful and durable for years, without the risk of cracking or damage.
