Concrete effect on MDF – how it works
A concrete effect on MDF can be created in several ways, but the key question is: how durable must the finish be? Repainting an MDF cabinet door is easy, but it must also withstand dirt and daily use.
That’s why we recommend Microcement (Beton Ciré) on MDF.
Why moisture-resistant MDF?
Always choose moisture-resistant MDF when working with Microcement. It is less likely to swell and therefore remains more stable.
Step-by-step: applying Microcement on MDF
Step 1: Sand the surface and make sure it is dust-free.
Step 2: Apply a primer such as Wijzonol Aquahecht, or use our Microcement primer rough.
Then apply our Microcement base Layer.
This technical underlayer ensures that wood fibres, joints or seams will not show through your final finish.
Step 3: Finish with Microcement in the colour and texture of your choice.
Extra tip: thickening MDF
Want to make MDF thicker by gluing two panels together? Always use mesh tape on the joints and skim the entire surface first. This prevents cracks and ensures a smooth, durable finish.

Can I paint MDF without using a primer?
No, we strongly advise against it. MDF absorbs paint very quickly, which will result in a patchy and uneven finish if you skip the primer. Always use a suitable primer such as Wijzonol Aquahecht. You can then apply Concrete effect paint or Lime paint if you wish. Keep in mind that this is purely decorative and not washable.
Can I use Lime paint or Concrete effect paint on MDF?
Yes, you can, but only with the right preparation. Always apply Wijzonol Aquahecht first, followed by EcoPrimer. This ensures proper adhesion and prevents the MDF from absorbing too much product. Note: Loam paint, Loam plaster and Texture paint are not suitable for MDF.
