Doing Microcement yourself: why not?
A question we often hear: can you apply Microcement yourself? Our answer is a clear ‘yes’, provided you have some experience with plastering. On this page we’ll explain how to turn your Microcement DIY project into a success.
We understand you’re in love with that organic Microcement dining table, wall shelf, or that your worktop could use a makeover. Microcement is the perfect solution – but what should you keep in mind?
There are two important things to consider before you start with our Microcement:
• which surface are you applying it to?
• which colour or finish do you like?
If you are starting from scratch, we recommend using waterproof MDF for your Microcement DIY project. This material is less likely to warp. Want to make your tabletop thicker? Always use mesh tape on the seams and smooth them out properly. You can also do this with levelling compound. If you have a single board without seams, this is not necessary.
For other substrates such as waterproof plywood or OSB, you can also work perfectly with our Microcement. Is the wood oiled or coated? Sand it thoroughly. Then apply Wijzonol aquahecht primer to prevent reactions between the oil layer and our Microcement. It’s an extra step, but it prevents grain patterns from showing through.
For kitchen worktops, never plaster the corners too tightly. Leave a small gap and finish it with Ottoseal S70 sealant. This sealant is available in several colours and prevents cracking in the corners.
Want to use Microcement outdoors, for example on a table under a canopy? Make sure to coat the entire piece all around. This prevents cracks caused by temperature changes. For tables exposed to full weather, we advise against using Microcement.
With these tips, you’re fully prepared to start your own Microcement project. Good luck with your creative build!
Please note: always order a colour sample first
Because screens display colours differently, we recommend ordering a colour sample first. This way, you can view and compare the colour in your own space.
